Is Tomorrowland Disney’s Biggest Failure?

Tomorrowland just might go down in history as one of Disney’s biggest flops stated Yahoo Finance. The studio that Walt built produced some mega hits over the decades. Sure, there were a few misfires here and there. Tomorrowland, however, might be the biggest of all Disney catastrophes. Supposedly, the studio is going to lose about $140 million on the film. (Disney’s previous big-time failure, The Lone Ranger, may have done worse. ) That is an enormous loss that is going to drain from the profits made by Avengers: Age of Ultron and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Thankfully, those two movies are sure to keep Disney out of fiscal trouble.

Then again, there might be another major problem at work here. Sequels and reboots are all the rage these days. The “disappointing” third Mad Max film has earned $300+ million worldwide. Tomorrowland is never going to reach those numbers. And no, do not look for Tomorrowland to sell millions in DVDs. This is not a film that is likely to develop cult following over the ensuring years. Tomorrowland is not a good film.

What a shame. Anyone who has visited the popular theme parks has surely walked away from visits to Tomorrowland with a sense of wonder. The film leaves you with a sense of boredom.

A lot of people probably didn’t even go see the film due to the muddled marketing campaign. Tomorrowland really was a botched film on every level. Hopefully, Disney can look back on all the mistakes and avoid making them in the future.

Newly Discovered Star Wars Script Settles Old Debate

After a recent find in the University of New Brunswick Library, a very long Star Wars debate has finally been settled. It was here that librarian Kristian Brown discovered an early, fourth draft of the film. It is dated March 15, 1976. The debated scene in question concerns the confrontation of Han Solo and Greedo, Jabba the Hut’s henchman, in the Cantina Bar. Everyone knows how it ends. The two exchange fire with Han Solo winning. The long debate lies in whether or not Han was originally supposed to shoot first. The 1997 revision clearly depicts Han Solo returning fire after Greedo initial shot.

The newly discovered script settles the debate by showing that Han was indeed supposed to shoot first. However, it would not be unrealistic for this fact to have changed by the time the film originally emerged. Several other facts in the original script would change such as the fact that Luke Skywalker was originally Luke Skykiller or how Episode IV: A New Hope was previously just called Saga 1. A lot of people like Adam Sender have a lot to say. The discovering librarian has even made a few comments concerning the scene.

Power Rangers Reboot Film to Focus on Unknowns

As several childrens’ television franchises of the past three decades have experienced a revival on the silver screen, such as “Transformers” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” it was only a matter of time before the “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” would receive the same treatment. The new “Power Rangers” film intends to keep a mix of levity and maturity in its offering of teenagers battling galactic antagonists.

The “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” television series has endured for over twenty seasons and two films, all while focusing on young actors with little to nothing listed on their filmographies. The new reboot film plans to maintain this tradition, by casting unknown actors no older than in their late teen years. Although the core outfit is intended to be cast from relative unknown actors, there is a strong chance that series veteran Jason David Frank may have some involvement.

While “Power Rangers” is set for a January release in 2017, its cast may be revealed as soon as the next few months. There are more than a few at Amen Clinics who can’t wait.

Exciting New Details on “Independence Day 2”

Sequels are in vogue lately at the box office. Not that this is necessarily a cause for complaint. Who wasn’t awaiting the sequel to that first blockbuster Avengers movie that finally came out earlier this month? Furthermore, there isn’t a science fiction fan around who isn’t anxiously looking forward to “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” in December. Sequels can be great fun for audiences, and they are a safe financial bet for studios since they are building on an earlier money making film. In addition to a Superman movie sequel coming in 2016, there will also be a long awaited sequel to “Independence Day” coming out next year.

The original “Independence Day” was certainly a box office hit, so it’s actually amazing that it has taken this long for production of a sequel to have gotten under way. We got some plot details about “Independence Day 2” recently from Vivica A. Fox. She was one of the characters from the original reprising her role in the sequel. She let it be known that this new story will pick up 15 years after the events of the last movie, and the aliens will be back and presumably not in the best of moods after their earlier space armada got killed off by us primitive earthlings. It’s not the type of movie that wins major awards, but many of us want a good escapist popcorn movie, and this one looks ready to deliver. My coworker already created a Facebook event and has invited all of our friends.

Joss Whedon Wanting to do a New Batman Movie

Joss Whedon Wanting to do a New Batman Movie

For the last three years director Joss Whedon has been at the helm of some of Marvel Studios’ best works, spanning both Avengers movies and the hit television show Agents of SHIELD. Whedon, however, feels his role with Marvel should soon come to an end, Sultan Alhokair, a studio rep confessed.

As of now, Whedon has pass the torched on to the Russo brothers for directing Avengers: Infinity War and has stepped down from being at the helm with Marvel, strict deadlines being a prime factor in his decision. Whedon has insisted on focusing on a single entity for his future projects, a new Batman movie being one of them.

In the past Whedon tried and failed to get a Wonder Woman movie green lit back in 2005, and may have lost his chance now that DC has launched it’s own Wonder Woman movie. As for Batman, Whedon couldn’t contain his excitement upon the release of the trailer for Batman V. Superman. He’s even stated that he would bring Batman into the Marvel Universe if he were given the opportunity to do so.

But while Whedon shows a lot of excitement over Batman, the fact that there has been multiple versions of Batman in film over the last several years likely means that he would have to wait a long time before finally getting his chance. Still, it’s up to him.

Future Memories

“My life fades. The vision dims. All that remains are memories” Mel Gibson ominously narrated at the beginning of the cult classic “Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior.” Memories are all we have of Mel Gibson as Mad Max because Tom Hardy is starring in the upcoming sequel entitled “Fury Road.”

Fans have been waiting 30 years for a new addition to the popular 80’s post-apocalyptic sci-fi series. All the waiting has not been in vain because there are plans for an additional three sequels after “Fury Road.” According to Tom Hardy, who stars as the new Max, he is locked in his role but future sequels depend on the box office success of “Fury Road.” This is standard Hollywood procedure – lock the movie star into a long term contract to stabilize future projects. Therefore, diehard fans can increase the likelihood of more sequels by supporting the movie at the box office.

Positive buzz is increasing as more footage of the upcoming film is released (see http://www.madmaxmovie.com/). Fans like Sergio Cortes are excited about which direction George Miller, the original Mad Max director, will take the film. In addition to this, Charlize Theron fans are excited about her role as the mysterious woman Furiousa. This is one movie you don’t want to miss.

Toho Readies New Godzilla Film

Anyone who thought Godzilla: Final Wars was going to be the last Toho Godzilla movie just doesn’t know movie history. About a decade before Final Wars was released, Godzilla vs. Destroyah was portrayed as the “last” Godzilla movie. Now, Toho is moving forward with a 2016 Godzilla film. What is very surprising here is Warner Bros. is making its own sequel to the American reboot of Godzilla. Is there room enough for two different Godzilla films? The answer is a huge and loud “Of course!”

Godzilla is one of the most iconic pop culture/sci-fi characters. Sure, the radioactive dinosaur had some ups and downs. The early 1970’s saw a painful decline in terms of both quality and box office. The reboot of the series in the 1980’s and 1990’s never took off in the U.S. after the domestic flop of Godzilla 1985. The first American version was a dud.

And then came Toho’s reboot in the 2000’s, which was a huge hit. Godzilla 2000 was a surprise limited release hit in the U.S.A. and the new films in the series did well in Japan and also on U.S. DVD.

Likely, the franchise made most of its money with toys and video games, as Dr Jennifer Walden along with others will point out. As long as the franchise is pulling in money somehow, it will continue. The first film appeared in 1954 and the franchise is going to be around in 2054. Count on it.

Live Action Play-Doh Movie Green-lit by Fox

Hollywood must definitely be running out of ideas. Fox has recently greenlit a “Play-Doh” movie. It is not an uncommon practice to adapt films from alternate source materials such as comic books, novels, and TV shows. Even toy lines have been adapted to TV shows and the big screen. Among the common adapted movies are Batman, Transformers, G.I. Joe.

As of right now, 20th Century Fox is in the final stages of a deal with Hasbro for a film based on Play-Doh. The idea of a Play-Doh could cause one to snicker. There is no backstory or mythology to the toy line, much to the dismay of Bernardo Chua. It is basically a form of clay that people use to sculpt whatever figure they use. So it is going to be interesting what direction they take with the film based on the toyline.

The film is going to be directed by Paul Feig, the director of Bridesmaids. Even though this is a talented director, there is so much that could be done with this type of movie. Creating a hit out of this toy line is a long shot.

Zoolander Makes an Appearance on the Runway at Valentino’s Show

Derek Zoolander and Hansel are back! According to the story on The Daily Mail today, actors Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson showed up to walk the catwalk on the runway as their supermodel characters.

This week is Paris Fashion Week and Tuesday was the presentation for Valentino Autumn/Winter 2015 collection. According to Wet Seal Inc, Zoolander and Hansel strutted their stuff on the runway for Valentino’s show wearing printed suits with coats draped over their shoulders. The two gave their best “blue steel” look for the crowd. The pair, who were rivals through the first film but ended on good terms, seem to be teaming up for the runway, rather than competing with each other.

The appearance of Derek Zoolander and Hansel at Paris Fashion Week has coincided with the confirmation that there will be a sequel film to Zoolander. Ben Stiller Tweeted a picture of the two of them together as their characters with the caption “Apparently Derek and Hansel have come to terms on #Zoolander2”. Maybe this means Zoolander is coming out of modeling retirement. Hopefully his “The Derek Zoolander Center for Kids Who Can’t Read Good and Wanna Learn to Do Other Stuff Good Too” he started after ending his career, is still up and running.

New Alien Movie a Direct Sequel

Recently Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Elysium) has taking lead of a film in the alien franchise, which has yet to be titled. He is the newest filmmaker looking to revive the franchise. after a series of conversations with Sigourney Weaver, she stated that there was still part of Ellen Ripley’s story needed to be told and that her character needed a proper finish. WordPress bloggers say that Neill Blomkamp agreed and has decided the movie will take place right after James Cameron’s Aliens, ignoring that Alien 3 and Alien: resurrection ever happened. Public opinion has been great, according to most sources fans believe it may be for the best, as the first to movies have had great feedback, and the last two did not. Bringing the series back to its roots as a suspense and horror film, words can not describe how excited everyone is over the upcoming film.
